But please anyone correct me if I am off the mark.Īnd as for Blenders rigging and character animation capability’s. It seems to be much more easy to pick up and get going with for those less familiar with 3D workflows. Not so much in more dedicated 3D animation, interactive or VFX studio environments. The impression I had was that this was mainly more generalist video and film production where 3D elements are used along with the whole edit and production pipeline. I always got the impression that it has a niche and market that is a little bit different from say Maya Max or Blender and it has obviously been very successful in this area and knows it’s market well. Although this was quite a few years back now. He was asking if I had any ideas and said the custom rigging functionality just didn’t seem to be there. ![]() One time I knew a guy who was trying to rig up and animate a row of custom rigged robot arms for a video project and really struggling. Normally as a single stand alone rather than pipelined into the system. I have only seen it used in house in studios I was at on rare occasions and then mostly for 3D motion graphics type work. Now if you need an application that only runs on Windows then you are out of luck, but it would be the same for apps that only run on OSX as well.Īs regards advanced animation tools and studio pipeline functionality this is the impression I was getting too but I have zero experience using Cinema 4D. I can run most everything I want in addition to all of the FOSS software, like Substance Painter/Designer, 3D-Coat, Davinci Resolve, etc. ![]() Once I have re-mounted my drives they all come back automatically (except things that get installed in /opt, but I just make a copy and restore it). I can completely rebuild my system in about 20 min and not have to worry about my installed applications. ![]() In general Linux is faster and more responsive than Windows for me. This just scratches the surface of the issues I have with Windows. You can have issues with updates in Linux, but you still have complete control over them and they are fixed usually in hours to a couple of days. So for a full month we were without a working print server because that is how long it took for Microsoft to fix the issue. The issue was with a security update that Microsoft will not allow you to back out of. At work here we have a print server that is running Windows Server that just up and stopped working because of an update. Your Windows system is only a update away from real disaster. Unix was the first to have virtual desktops and Linux has inherited this feature and so it’s much more mature and complete than the Windows version. Only the user should be able to switch the desktops and the OS should not give applications access to this. I like virtual desktops, but Windows allows applications to switch the desktops (Office apps are really bad in this case), which should never happen. I really dislike the registry, it’s so much easier to manage and maintain applications when all you need is a text editor in Linux instead of having to use a special app that you can do some real damage to the system with. I’m not a gamer in that the only game I run on my system is Minecraft which runs just fine on Linux and it’s not resource hungry.įor me the difference between Linux and Window is many little things, but in the end it’s a death from a thousand cuts. ![]() I’m probably a special case as I started using Unix back in the late 80’s and then started using Linux in the mid 90’s.
